Subject:Tibetan Piece?
Posted By: BL Sat, Mar 24, 2018 IP: 2603:3020:5:9d00:bd2

Hi Everyone,

The piece in the link is gold leaf on some type of paper. It is, unframed, 31" X 10 and 1/4".

I would like to find out whether this piece is Tibetan and it's approximate age. Thanks.

I also take this imagery to be Chinese, as it lacks essential tantric iconography that comes with Tibetan depictions. I'm not steeped enough in the subject myself to explain in detail, but the central figure may be the historical Buddha Sakyamuni in the Abhaya Mudra or posture of offering reassurances and blessings. He appears to be flanked by two Bodhisattvas or Mortal Buddhas with halos. The remainder of his audience likely are the holy sages called the Luohan.

In the sky on the right-hand side of the Buddha is the Big Dipper, which along with its surrounding constellation contains stars of astrological importance to Chinese Buddhism (as well as other Eastern religions). On the other side, the dragon represents the constellation Draco, which ruled the skies in traditional Chinese beliefs.

You can find additional info on this subject at Wikipedia.org and other online sources.

Best regards,

Bill H.
