Subject:Need Assistance

Thank you for the opportunity to post here

This is a handwriting and original seal from the Qian*long period. Can you please tell me why this seal is a bit different from the others?

Thank you in advance!

- Ben

The Qianlong emperor had hundreds of seals, most were quite different from each other. This one looks like it has been applied to the base of porcelain or glass. To me it does not look handwritten or dating to the 18th century. Can you make your question more specific?

I examined it and the mark appears to be handwritten to me. Just wanted to know if the seal is a special one since it differs from the common seals.

Thank you for the reply!

This does not look like it is from 18th c, looks like it is from 20th c. You cannot date anything from just the marks as they can be copied fairly easily.

Modern faux seals applied as transfers may emerge from the kiln with a tactile quality that's mistakable as hand-written, as seems to be the case here. I believe too that the red color in this seal is too intense for the 18th or 19th century.

Below is a comparison with a fake one. The fake is a rubber stamp seal taken from a 20th-century modern piece.

Hello All.
I'm a bit confused even from the first post by Ben. I didn't understand the "others" ref, although further down the thread a comment rat mentioned, "many types", of seal and of this everyone surely agrees. Bill mentions about tactile feel and colour which I also think is a spot on observation but then Ben reposts a perfectly valid two set picture example of his versus a stamp of dubious quality and when you look at them his looks of a type I would see on something about late 19th early 20th century. Then referring back to rat's post it needs to be clarified if the seal is under glazed or applied after which makes a big difference. I have gone beyond my knowledge base. I have some pieces with over glazed seals applied. They are very nice but I would never think them more than 70 years old. Best wishes all. D

The marks shown here are all basically the same thing: essentially flawless transfer-technology of one form or another, whether applied by rubber stamp, decal or a big, expensive ink-jet printer of the computer-controlled kind that also can put the spotless wrap-around logo of your favorite football team on a porcelain coffee mug. There's no real or fake, by my way of thinking, only "period" or "just another part of the decoration". Anybody worried about "fake" should stop as soon as they've paid, because as recently noted elsewhere in the forum, it's too late to sweat it once the money changes hands.

Thank you for the replies.

The seal is underglaze.

The exquisite quality of the work that was done to execute the piece is too excellent. I believe there is something special about it and frankly, it could be a period piece.

I'm sure everyone would appreciate a look at this item instead of just its mark, thank you.

Thanks Bill. Much clearer for me and I hope others. Just goes to show that the piece is more important than the seal I suppose as the piece will reveal more secrets and quicker.
