Subject:Japanese/chinese vase

Hi, none too sure but probably Japanese due to 2 character marks. Very nice but proving a headache trying to identify and period. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Why do so many people posting on AsianArt assume everything is Japanese?

This is typically Korean, with the inlaid slip cranes and the off centre signature.

The signature reads 榮東, but as I can't read Korean I cannot give you the pronunciation.

You're probably right, I was not able to find anything on the net about a potter or decorator Eito and although this vase has a crackled surface it does not look like typical Satsuma.

Hello, thanks for the info. The reason I assumed (wrongly) is that I do not know the difference, hence the need to enquire! Isn't that the very reason forums exist?

According to Unicode character page information, the Korean transliteration would be 'Yeng-tong' for 榮東. However, I believe that Unicode transliterations may sometimes vary a bit from what you find in use locally.

Looks like Japanese Satsuma, marked with - I think - Eito 榮東.
No information found (yet) about this name and Satsuma pottery. Maybe someone else know more?
