Subject:20th C. Japanese Kao and Wood
Posted By: Robert Reznick Fri, Jun 16, 2017 IP: 73.191.105.141

This artist's signature is on the bottom of a carved dish that I take to be late 20th C. I'd appreciate any identification of the artist, as well as a suggestion for the unusually figured wood. Thanks.

Hi
Is the bowl heavy? My picture is not that clear but the grain looks like keyaki (zelkova) which is japanese elm . It is a valued hardwood.

Otherwise, if the bowl is very light it may be paulownia (kiri) which also has feathering on the edge of the grain.

Will leave the signature to the experts. But you seem to have it sideways a the moment.
Regards
Sue

Thanks! It is pretty heavy & feels like a hardwood. Zelkova was a candidate.

Hi,
Looking at your photo again the colour is not right for paulownia. Keyaki is the most likely possibility. If you search the name you should come up with some examples to compare yours with. Keyaki is very decorative. Older pieces than yours will probably show a bit darker in the grain feather.
