Subject:Help with Vase Identification Mystery
Posted By: Santiam Tue, Jun 13, 2017 IP: 69.145.147.129

I purchased this lovely vase several years ago from an antique shop. It does not appear to be an antique Japanese Vase because it is crackle glaze (not the norm for Satsuma, etc) however the mark, which appears to be Gyozan, does appear to date it as "not modern." Any help clarifying the mark and period is appreciated.
Thank you

Gyozan indeed: 暁山. Probably made somewhere between 1910-1940. This is what I found about the Gyozan kiln:

Okada Gyozan and his studio are very famous and well known mostly for their work with Kiyomizu (old Kyoto) Satsuma. Gyozan Kiln has its origins in the 17th century. Around the beginning of the 18th century Gyouzan Kiln was listed by the Emperor’s family as one of the 5 fine kilns of Kyoto.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Company began to export the reproductions of Ninsei and Kenzan and original Kyo-Satsuma ware under the name of Gyozan and had orders not only from the USA, but also from European countries. After 1950 Kyo-Satsuma became well-known in many foreign countries.

Regards,
Martin.
