Subject:Help to decipher Satsuma ware mark
Posted By: Ann Sun, May 28, 2017 IP: 203.18.63.128

Would any one be able to fill in the blanks on this inscription beyond
Dai Nippon, Satsuma on kuni?
(reposting from 22-5-17 as I didn't specify help with mark in previous subject line - hoping to catch more interest this time!This is Cricket cage in Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney)
Thank you.

Hi Ann,

I can only help you a little bit.
From right to left::
- 1st column: xx Kozan ? 光 山
- 2nd column: Satsuma 薩 广 Kuni 国 Nishikitani 錦 谷
- 3rd column: Mi 實 xx Do 堂 Teiko (or Joko) 定 光
- 4th column: Teiko (or Joko) 定 光 Ga 画 (painted by).
The seal in the square is Mi(nori) 實, this mark is seen on pieces by Fuzan, Kagetsu, Nobuaki, Shunko, etc. as a seal of the Mibae In (Mibae school) - see picture.

Perhaps others can help with the characters I could not decipher.
Regards,
Martin.

Perhaps not relevant to your question, but I would like to post a link to the New York dealer FLYING CRANES ANTIQUES LTD., who specialize in japanese antiques of a very high standard, for you to compare the quality of the satsuma cricket case. Seems like very fine quality and possibly quite valuable. There was someone who posted a very fine satsuma vase on this board, but got zero feedback, and therefore I wanted to post the link, but unfortunately I failed to relocate the thread.

Thank you Martin. That is invaluable help. I so appreciate your generosity on this forum. I am a volunteer looking at the collection in the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney and given many items entered the collection in the 19th century documentation is scarce.
