Would Highly Appreciate ANY Help with a Translation of Four Chinese Character Signature to English which is on a Soapstone Carving. Thank You VERY Much! Gary Knudtzon

I believe the first two characters, as read down from the top of the stack, may be 榕係 (rong xi) in the mandarin pinyin transcription. "Rong" is the banyan tree, a symbol of long life and another name for Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, where banyan trees are plentiful. The character "Xi" in one sense means an "able servant" but also is used with reference to Jiangxi provincial people and language.

The other characters don't ring any bells through the scrawl and fuzz.

Bill H.

Thanks again Bill! You are probably right on those few characters but might have to take the piece to a Chinese language expert maybe at a Colllege. Appreciate your help! Gary K

it may be japanese instead.
first character is 榕
second may be 僞
third is unclear, but perhaps some katakana ending in ラ
fourth may be something like 橏
