I must confess to have been waiting with no less anticipation than you for somebody who's more than a dilettante like me to stand up and take notice. So before either of us hold our breath to the turn-blue point, here's the take on this mark by a student of Chinese who's been trying unsuccessfully for years to figure out nuances of Japanese language. At least I can usually count on the kind souls in this forum to step forward and grade my papers when I'm wrong. (;o)

伍百五十二 - 552 (Maybe a stock number? First five in anti-fraud form may not be correct.

大日本 - Dai Nihon - Imperial Japan

安田造 - Yasuda Zo - Made by Yasuda

The following links seem to be relevant:

https://www.chinese-forums.com/forums/topic/35553-chinese-porcelain-mark/

https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/christies-south-kensington/catalogue-id-srchristi10075/lot-33488838-c8d3-4914-b57e-a4240019f310

I infer from this vase and the one seen at the first link that Yasuda's people were better at decorating vases than writing names on them.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks for the info and the research. Yeah interesting line of characters, probably why it was difficult for me to match characters on my own. Now the hard part, attempting to find its maker and value and see if its worth selling or keeping on my shelf. I think it looks awesome.

If you had looked through this site for similar marks you would have done part of the translation yourself.

Dai Nippon, made by AnDen - 大日本 安田造

and then on the far right, something that looks like a number - Right, 152.

If you search for Dai Nippon, or Great Japan you might get some indication of age.

I did attempt to look through and try to match some, and I had a suspicion about a few characters that ended upon being correct like "Great Japan" Now I just need to try and find similar aged items for from brand and maker and see if its worth selling or keeping. Either way I love the vase and think its beautiful. Thanks for all your help and translation.

As an afterthought, the first "5" in my take on the numbers could also be "右" (yuu/migi - "right side"). It would make sense in terms of a pair of vases meant for mantel or altar use, but I have no further explanation for the garbage piled on top of it.

From top to bottom:
- On the left: Yasuda 安田 Zo 造 (Made by Yasuda).
- In the middle: Dai Nippon 大日本 (Great Japan).
- On the right: top 2 characters ?? Then 10-1-10-2, so 11 十一 and 12 十二.

Regards,
Martin.

Thanks for your help and translation. Now the hard part, finding the maker and age and seeing what the value is and seeing if its worth keeping or selling. Either way I do love the vase and think its beautiful.
