Subject:Four character over glaze blue Qianlong mark on exquisite vase
Posted By: pavel Mon, Feb 03, 2014 IP: 83.220.239.12

Hello everyone. Please help me take a look at this vase which is being offered at a rather high price as a genuine piece of the Qianlong period. It is very well-made and in very good condition.

Unfortunately, a friend of mine told me that although it is a beautiful piece, it is rather new, since the mark is over glaze, which started to be common in the beginning of the 20th century, and all earlier marks were almost exclusively under glaze. I have been unable to find extra proof of this claim though.

What do you think?

Whoever told you that this is M&P for the QianLong Emperor era is delusional - or a liar and a cheat.

Some Qianlong period porcelains had overglaze blue marks in clerical script like this one, but your vase is of a figural painting style that more resembles that of the mid-20th century (late Republic - early People's Republic), when female figures were beginning to look a bit more like Barbie Dolls than traditional Chinese beauties. Here's another vase from that period with what I believe is the same decoration as yours, showing the Qiao Sisters, heroines from the classic "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", as they cast their fortune through the I Jing, surrounded by attendants. While the figural art is much the same style as on yours, this vase has a red six-character overglaze Qianlong mark.

Best regards,

Bill H.

as others have already commented, this is not a Qianlong vase but a 20th century piece. The quality is not bad and these pieces are collected but you should research it for what it is, not as a Qianlong piece.
