Hi Arjan,

If you're talking about subject matter, stylistically this appears possibly to be a time-worn Japanese depiction of Kannon (the Bodhisattva Guanyin to Chinese Buddhists) surrounded by worshipful Rakan (Luohan in Chinese or Arhat in Sanskrit).

If you mean the medium, it seems to be painted on something rounded, which I'd guess might be a censer or temple urn, considering the subject matter. There are hints of texture in the rubbed gilt halo around the Bodhisattva's head, which may indicate the painting is on crackle-glaze stoneware, but that's the limit of my guesswork.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Arjan,

I'll venture a guess even though my limited knowledge has me firmly planted on the asking questions and not giving answers side of the fence. I'd say this might be a Meiji period satsuma vase depicting her royal highness Queen Victoria and subjects.

Hi Arjan,
Just for fun, I would say it's Kutani, but possibly Koto-yaki? Horrible looking faces of rakan group. It would definitely scare young children.
Is there any prize for the right answer??????

Some more pictures.
The mark reads (when I'm right) "Satsuma yaki Bankozan" .......

Hi all,

Thanks all for your contributions.
All together you are right.
It's Japanese
It's Meiji
It's Satsuma,
and painted on a rounded surface.

In fact there is nothing flat of the surface. It is painted on the inside of a footed bowl. It looks a bit anamorphic done and gives an optical illusion of a flat surface when you look inside.

When you look at the outside you can see some Kutani influances and a well known theme/dragon used on a lot of, so called, Dragonware.
My own guess is that this is an early example of an item with this Dragon on it.

Arjan

Hi Arjan,
This piece proves some so-called Satsuma pieces were in fact Kutani in disguise. I would say this is one of those. One time all pottery and porcelain makers rushed to make Satsuma and Satsuma, that was a hot name. Of course, there was no regulation to limit for the name sake. Satsuma name was freely labeled and stamped on the product. So, just because it says Satsuma-yaki,it is not really Satsuma.
This piece is a marriage of Satsuma Nishiki-de & Kutani Akae-kinrande. Quite wild and crazy. A name,Bankozan, totally made up name.
After I joined this forum, I started to look into webs for Satsuma,it's wild and crazy, what people are selling as Satsuma. I guess it's fun that way,but anybody seriously has an interest in Japanese Arts & Crafts, should know the real background, what all really means.
Besr Regards,
Emiko
