Subject:Antique Chinese Jade Sword
Posted By: Mario Fri, May 22, 2009 IP: 70.231.249.143

Greetings! Would appreciate your thoughts and expertise on this sword. It was purchased approximately 40 years ago in Hong Kong and has a certificate that states it is older then 100 years. I know there was a thread stating these certificates can be questionable. Thank you in advance. Cesar

The finest appraisal I ever saw had one sentence:
"We guarantee that this Jade carving is more than 100 years old".
signed

It came together with a modern Serpentine carving.

Dear Mario

This sword looks like taste of Yuan Shikai. It's conservative but too much elabolate. It's too much decoration stuffs within one piece.
--------------------
Yuan Shikai, September 16, 1859 June 6, 1916) was an important Chinese general and politician famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his role in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor of China, his autocratic rule as the second President of the Republic of China, and his short-lived attempt to revive the Chinese monarchy, with himself as the "Great Emperor of China".

---------------------
It is a silver coated with gold? with ancient jade works, the handle is from Neolithic jade, the rectangular nipples plaque was cut from the Ming Dynasty Kui tablet. the sword guard may be from the Song Dynasty, but the white dragon rectangular plaque is surely from the mid Qing Dynasty, and the scarbard chape might be from the Song or Ming.

I think it is possibly late Qing as the certificate said.

Nice work, actually.

Have fun

Your assessment is encouraging and enlightening. I looked into Yuan Shikai and like you think it doesnt fit into his style which makes me believe it could be of an earlier time in the Qing Dynasty. I will confess I am not very well versed in Chinese culture but intend to further my education / research into this beautiful object.

Miss Mui, Thank you for your time. Im including a few other close ups photos in the hope that someone else can shed more light on the history of this sword. Again Thank You!
