The scroll is a 17th century painting by Kanou (Kano) Yasunobu.
Signed
signed and sealed "Bokushinsai"
There could be no doubt about authenticity here.

Best wishes
Peter

Also, am not certain of the meaning of this painting! Read online and found a mention of monkeys reaching for the moon in the water, so wonder whether it is the monkeying of the wandering mind chasing the illusion-shadow of the moon, a teaching of Buddhism, depicted here?

the motif is a very common zen painting to remind the viewer not to reach for the moons reflection in the water. the fact that the gibbons even team up to do this is a further warning.
It should also be a warning for all the readers of the art forum not waste time with question of value and authentication but learn and understand quality and meaning!

yasunobu is for me the best artist of the three famos brothers (others beeing tanyuu and naonobu). His brothers have a superior brush and a more refined style, but his artistic mind is making more than up for it. his paintings are always to the point.

Thanks so very much Peter for the insight on the theme of the painting, for emphasizing on what aspect to look for in, for the link to the artistโ€™s other works, AND for the words of wisdom on how to approach Arts๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™
I highly respect, appreciate, and share the same sentiment and values โค๏ธ
