Subject:Help translating Japanese on WWII era box
Posted By: James H Sun, Feb 28, 2021 IP: 68.129.250.80

My grandfather fought in Japan during WWII and shipped back this box. I never got to meet him unfortunately so I have no idea the significance of this box but would love someone’s help translating the writing on it.

Inscriptions,
黄銅 - Kōdō - Brass
舞鶴 - Maizuru - Name of a city in Kyōto Prefecture
凾 - Hako - Box
價 - Atai - Price

A rather laconic style inscription.
I think the box was used in a hardware store and contained brass made decoration pieces for sale - that is attached to its surface. These decoration pieces with a kind of paulownia crest were used by furniture makers etc.

Under the 價 "price" caption the current price was always handwritten on a piece of papaer slip and pasted on.

With regards,
I.Nagy
