Subject:Help with two cloisonne chargers
Posted By: sylvia Sun, Feb 07, 2021 IP: 173.31.2.137

Hello,
Could somebody tell me anything about these chargers? I got them at auction today and the description said that they are from Meiji period. I would like to know about the design on the rim(border). To me it looks special but maybe it is not. Thank you!
Kind regards,
Sylvia

From the enamel colors, wire work, and extensive pitting of the enamels, I think these were made at the beginning of the Meiji period, or about 1870. On pieces made from the late 1880s to the end of Meiji one sees more colors, finer wire work (often silver and more rarely gold) and a dramatic decrease in the number and size of pits and other imperfections. As to the design of the border, stylized butterflies and other abstract decorative elements were incorporated into the design.
