Subject:Help with old Japanese cups tomobako inscription
Posted By: John T. Sat, Oct 24, 2020 IP: 2a01:cb05:8362:5000:

Hi,

I recently acquired these Japanese sake cups. They came in their original tomobako. Now, along with the lid, I found a fair amount of writing on the underside of the box.

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to assist me with the translation?

Regards,

John,

Lid,
水杯 - Mizusakazuki - Water cups
市原埜村 - Ichihara - Nomura (Two village names)
上田金蔵 - Ueda Kinzō (Surname given name)

Bottom,
On some places the inscription is so faint that I can't decipher it. According to my best comprehension the cups were bought in 1875, and were used at the wedding ceremony of the inscriber's mother, who kept them over fifty years along with other family relics. Later the other relics were sold off. The inscriber just wanted to let it know to the descendants.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Many thanks.

I've never seen such an inscription before. It's quite touching...

Thank you once more.
