Subject:Old Japanese papers found with yatate help
Posted By: John T. Tue, Jul 28, 2020 IP: 90.49.34.134

Hi,

I have this old Japanese portable inkwell or yatate. My guess would be that it's mid 20th century.

It still had its box when I bought it and inside, I found these documents.

I would be grateful if anyone could shed any light on what they say.

Thank you.

Regards,

Inscription on box,
町人 矢立 - Chōnin Yatate - Merchant's portable brush-and-ink case
Booklet,
まねき 大福帳 - Maneki Daifukuchō
Daifukuchō was a commercial account-book that spread throughout Japan during the Edo period
Daifuku is a nickname for prosperity
Chō is book. Maneki Daifuku is "Prosperity calling"

Rubber stamp on the crumpled wrapping paper,
墨 - Ink

Leaflet,
A brief introduction about the historical background of Yatate and Daifukuchō in the Japanese culture written by the maker.
Colophon reads,
House of Creative Folk Arts
Written by the maker Kōhei (Copy)

I think it is from the 1960-70s.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi,

Thanks again for your help. I've always been curious about the papers. I'm guessing that they always belonged with the yatate and that someone took seriously good care of it to avoid losing anything.

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards,
