Subject:Help With Poem Translation on Bleu De Hue Tea Plate
Posted By: George Ingraham Thu, May 28, 2020 IP: 2601:602:cc00:ea50:d

Would greatly appreciate is someone can translate the poem on this bleu de Hue tea plate.

The scene is Han Yu riding a pony across a bridge followed by an attendant. Han Yu was a celebrated statesman from the Tang dynasty who retired into exile taking with him his favorite prunus tree, carried by an assistant. The motif of the hump backed bridge is a further symbol of the scholar in exile.

Inscription,
独嘆楳花痩回 - (Riding the donkey across the bridge) He alone saw plum blossoms wither

It is the last line of a poem from the "Romance of Three Kingdoms". Interesting citation that fits to the story of Han Yu. For better understanding I put the preceding line in parenthesis.

With regards,
I.Nagy
