Inscription on the side,
山静泉清 茗茶 清...
Quiet mountains clear spring - Ming Tea - Clear..
Mark under the lid,
孟臣 - Mengchen
Long mark on the bottom,
大明天啓甲卯
荊谿恵孟臣製
Great Ming Empire, during the Reign of *Tianqi in the Year of Wood-Rabbit,
In Jingxi (Old name of Yixing) made by Hui Mengchen
*Tianqi: Title of reign 1621-1628 of Zhu Youjiao, 15the Emperor of the Ming Dynasty
There is a slight problem with the Wood-Rabbit Year. It simply doesn't exist in the lunar calendar, designated by the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches - a fictitious year.
This is questioning the authenticity of the pot.
Hui Mengchen was a famous potter during Tianqi and Chongzhen emperors. The business started by Hui was continued by his descendants until the 19th C. The pots have the words made in Jingxi bu Hui Mengchen
embossed in the bottom.
