Subject:Japanese Crackle Glaze Stoneware Jar With Painted Calligraphy
Posted By: Kevin Donnelley Tue, Oct 22, 2019 IP: 173.2.102.180

The hand shaped stoneware jar has three different characters painted around the circumference on a finely crackled white ground glaze with a orange/red tone. Tiny pinholes in the glaze expose the stoneware surface

The transparent blue enamel has a grainy or powder like appearance under magnification. A second firing was needed to cover both the ground glaze and calligraphy with the clear glaze. The clear glaze covers the stoneware surface where there are losses to the calligraphy

The foot is concave with thick glaze drippings evident along the foot rim. The glaze around the lip at top was wiped, leaving a mostly bare stoneware surface. The interior glaze is similar in color and character as w/what can be seen of the ground on the exterior.
Hoping one of the Japanese experts might be able to provide a translation to the characters .
H: 4"; 10.16 cm

Thank you for looking,

Kind regards
Kevin

More views to show the concave foot, a closeup of the top rim and the character of the transparent blue enamel which should be one of the indicators of age
