Subject:I need help with this sculpture
Posted By: Carlos Thu, Feb 07, 2019 IP: 83.32.206.243

Hello everybody,
First of all, I apologize if my question has nothing to do with this forum. I do not possess any knowledge about oriental art and I have this little sculpture which appears Chinese or Japanese. It was a present to me many years ago.
I would like to learn more about its origin, what it's made of (ivory, animal tusk, etc.). It is also signed in the base.
I would appreciate if someonecould tell me something about it beacuse I wouldn't know where else to direct my question.
Thank so much in advance for your cooperation. Regards,
Carlos

Stylistically, this appears to me to be from Japan. The base clearly shows traces of capillaries in the surface, indicating the substance is animal bone and not ivory, at least on the base, and according to my experience, probably the rest of the carving too. The cursive signature seems to be 玉芝, which may possibly be pronounced "Gyokushi", but this is from a machine translation and not an expert opinion.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you Bill, tahnk you I.Nagy.

So Gyokushi is an artist? As I said in my first post I don't know anything about oriental art.
I've googled it and I can't find any reference that sheds light on the subject, so please I'd be very grateful if anyone could tell anything more.

Thank you so much.

Carlos
