Subject:Very fine Japanese inorganic vase - Why two parts???

So, I bought this very nicely carved Japanese ivory vase, but I am wondering why it was made in two parts? Any thoughts?

It only measures about 5" tall. The neck of the vase is threaded and screws into the body of the vase. The neck is rather thicker than I would expect for such a small piecea, so perhaps this vase has a more specific function.
