This brings to mind a Burmese or Thai palm leaf manuscript, which usually would contain Buddhst scripture, stories from the life of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni and the likes. These manuscripts usually have a wooden cover, but the pages inside are made of dried palm leaves, which usually are strung together I think but might also be sewn as this one apparently is. The content is typically is written in Pali script.
This example looks like it may not be very old, as the ink in the antique ones tends to be faded.
