Subject:VOC Charger? Bowl
Posted By: Rex Woodmore Wed, Jul 11, 2018 IP: 203.206.49.195

I would appreciate your opinion please. In my youth I dived on the treasure of a 1656 VOC Shipwreck,The Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)when she was first discovered off the coast of Western Australia about 50 years ago.Recently I was shown and am now fascinated by, a VOC Kraak ware bowl (a Charger?) that is more ornate than any I can find online. It has a couple of holes(not in photo) in the underneath rim & I imagine it may have been on a stand, perhaps in a Captain's cabin as a hand basin??? I can't help imagining that it is something special perhaps from one of the three known VOC vessels wrecked on our coast. If so then it is a museum piece. Regards, Rex

Hi Rex,
I have a very bad feeling about it.

Just two quotes of the artical:
"It is an original (not a replica)"
" COULD THIS ANTIQUE VOC DISH BE A FAKE?"

My question(s) about the first quote.....
an Original what?: Should it be Chinese, Japanese, European or maybe Indonesian?
and should this be porcelain?

My answer on the question of the second quote "COULD THIS ANTIQUE VOC DISH BE A FAKE?" would be: YES.

Regards,
Arjan

Thanks for your message. I wrote the article and did not want to mislead anyone. I would be dishonest if I pretended to know if it is genuine or not. I am hoping it is and my friend (who I trust) and his Dad who showed me it (a highly respected and knowledgeable antiques dealer) say it is genuine and have it in a private collection. Since writing the article onmy website Oztreasure, I have seen nothing online nothing that compares with the quality and detail and have read that it is called a foliated dish (wavy edge) which I have seen on none others. If it is a fake I would expect to see lots of them. I think it could prove to be a special piece produced for a high ranking VOC officer. (I believe they did this sometimes) Notice no dragons as most fakes have. My interest comes from having almost drowned on a 1656 VOC shipwreck.

The last photo shows a "VOC" that is not the one on your platter. Where is it from? Do you have a scan of the reverse side of the piece?

Thank you for your reply Richard. The last photo is the underside of the platter (By the way is that what it is a 'platter'?)As you will see on my treasure hunting website page: https://oztreasure.weebly.com/-imagine-treasure.html

The plate is a recent production. This is one of the most copied pieces of the China Trade, due to its historical importance and current value. The border design, brushwork and blue color value are just not period.
