Detail: Face Early-to-mid 19th C. pre-Mandalay, dry lacquer Sakyamuni. Dry-lacquer sculpture is manufactured by coating a clay core with succesive layers of lacquer mixed with sawdust. Each layer must be allowed to dry before subsequent layers are applied. When the lacquer is thick enough, the figure is carved down to its final form, and the clay core is removed.
