4. Ratnasambhava Tibet; Eastern 14th c. paint on cotton
|
This painting is a fine example of the early "Dayab" style of Eastern Tibet, named after the region in Kham where the style was popular during the later 14th and 15th century. We see in this painting some of the characteristics of the Sakyamuni but here we see the eastern Tibetan characteristics more fully developed. The raised gold on gesso technique - a hallmark of this school - is particularly finely executed. The similarity between the face of this figure and the Sakyamuni is quite remarkable, both share the same delicately rendered features, fine mouth and eyes. The ringlets of hair surrounding the face are particularly finely executed. |
