3. A Lama Tibet circa 17th century Gilt copper alloy 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm) high |
This extraordinary portrait of a Lama has not yet been identified; unfortunately there is no inscription. There can be no doubt that the sculpture was drawn from life, the face in particular is highly individualized, with the tonsure running into a beard and mustache, and the fleshy features in a calm smile. The rear of the sculpture is left ungilded. Baseplate missing. Published Dinwiddie, Donald. Portraits of the Masters: Bronze Sculptures of the Tibetan Buddhist Lineages.
