Chinese Box with Ivory and Jade Identification

I'll take a shot at this, but don't hold me to every detail.

I believe the box is Japanese 19th c. The objects depicted appear Chinese in style, which was not too uncommon during the Meiji era.

The box is likely a trinket box, or perhaps something used in a stationary kit...both were quite popular objects in Japan as European tourists were eagerly looking to buy small objects to bring back from their trip to the orient.

I'll make one more guess....the objects depicted are Tsukumogami, or antiques of 100 years or more that have acquired a spirit.

It is in part due to this folklore that antiques were so highly regarded in Japan.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be more than glad to point out all my mistakes and you'll get your answer once and for all.

Best,
Tim
