I've owned one of these in the past (the one shown above being a photo of it used in past queries to the forum) and have had a long time to ponder this question over the years.

This is one of at least two different versions of Nguyen Thanh Le castings of heads of Asian women I've seen, the other having the neck squared off at the bottom and balanced on a rod for support, while this one has the neck modeled after that of a bust; i.e., extended down in front. All things considered, I believe the nut and bolt was better suited for the stability of this style of casting, which probably was meant to be viewed from its front, where the nut and bolt would not be conspicuous.
