Very attractive, but in near Song period jizhou the leaf impression should be sunken, it burn out during firing.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi Cal, thanks for looking. I understand the leaf is burnt out during firing but similar to the papercut bowls which were made using a similar method the image is very slightly raised. I have no doubts at all regarding this piece myself & would ask you to compare to the British museum example or any other of the several leaf temmokus held by various museums worldwide. Also take a look at the close up in my follow up post.

Thanks again for your opinion.
Phil.

Hi Cal, all,
here are two more examples of Jizhou leaf temmokus, the first offered by Bonhams a couple of years ago & the second in the British museum.
I know this is hard to judge from photo`s but as I mentioned I`m pretty confident this bowl is OK. There is still some small controversy as to how these were actually made but NH Koh on his website suggests that the amber colour is indicative of a layer of glaze covering the leaf before firing & hence the slight raising of the leaf image, anyhow compare the pictures.

All the best,
Phil.

Hi Daryl,
I did see your bowls on your web page whilst I was checking out this bowl before buying it, you`re lucky to have two, did you get them in China?
I`ll show mine to Ambrose & Simon when I see them at the weekend & then we`ll have more hands on opinions for anyone who still has doubts.

All the best,
Phil.

I apologiosed as I have forgotten where this quoate regarding Jizhou leaf bowl was copied from.
"Jizhou kilns produced varieties of black wares with its own distinctive decorations such as tortoise shell glaze, paper cutting and also natural leaf. The leaf decorated bowl is sought after by collectors all over the world. The Jizhou leaf bowl as shown has a thin wall and the paste is dense white clay. The bowl has a conical form with flaring walls rising from a small base which is a characteristic of Jizhou is. Apart from these, there is a raised button in the middle of the bowl which is also a characteristic of these types of bowl. It is fully glaz3ed except the foot as it was fired standing on its feet.
The Jizhou potters are very creative and they achieved this effect by applying the dark brown glaze first. Later they put the leaf in the interior of the bowl and cover it with a transparent glaze. During firing, the leaf is burnt and what was left behind is the ghostly image of the leaf. Some of these transparent glazes are of dull appearance and some are of a glossy appearance. Some bowls have one, two or three leaves depending very much on the potters."
