Subject:Question about translation of painting box lid
Posted By: Charles Helwig Tue, Jun 09, 2026 IP: 99.237.102.253

I am reposting this as it appears my image wasn't attached properly.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this inscription on a Japanese scroll painting box says. I believe the first part is the artist's name (Nakabayashi Chikuto) but I am unable to understand the rest of the inscription. I assume it includes the title of the painting and possibly more information. If it helps, the painting is a winter landcape.

Much obliged for any response!

Thank you in advance.

Charles

Inscription,
竹洞山人畫溪山雪靈圖
Chikutō-sanjin Ga Keizan Sekirei Zu

Painted by Chikutō-sanjin*
A Painting of Snow Spirit(s) and Mountain Stream(s)

(It’s a bit of a strange title; if the picture itself doesn’t back it up, it can be interpreted as "A Painting of Snowy Mountain(s) and Stream(s))

* Pseudonym of Nakabayashi Chikuto

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I.Nagy:

Thank you so much! Yes it does fit the painting (snowy clifts and a figure crossing a bridge over a stream.) Sorry for the late response as I didn't realize there was a reply until now. (I'm new to the system)

Best wishes,

Charles Helwig
