Subject:Help with Kunichika print series
Posted By: Stan Mon, May 11, 2026 IP: 73.68.5.180

I bought 5 Kunichika prints, thinking they were all from one series. Of course, I did my research after I received them. It appears there are at least two series involved. I think 3 are from one series (below). I'll present the other 2 once this post appears. From what I can find online, the prints below are from the series Thirty Six Selected Poems printed in 1866:

1) Actor Bandô Mitsugorô VI as the Mistress Okane, Actually Okane of Ômi (Mekake Okane jitsu wa Ômi no Okane)

2) Actor Ichimura Kakitsu IV portraying Hayano Kanpei, a character from the famous Chushingura (47 Ronin) story

3) The title cartouche on this one looks a little different, but I believe it is from the same series. I was unable to find information on this print online. If you can tell me the actor and role, that would be appreciated.

It's from the same series, but the first character "見" in the title cartouche is
replaced here with the alternative kana "み".

見たて三十六句 → みたて三十六句
Both read "Mitate sanjūrokku" Thirty-six Poems Alluded

Inscriptions,

腰元おかる Koshimoto Okaru

Poem,
晩うるつほみ愛ぐし朝さくら
Yube uru tsubomi megushi asazakura
Last night's lovely buds, cherry blossoms in the morning

Name of poet,
梅枝 Umegae

Note, for technical reasons alternative kanas are represented in their modern forms.

With regards,
I.Nagy

The remaining 2 prints, while at first glance appear to be from the same series as the previous 3, are from the series "Thirty-six Poems on Kabuki" (Kabuki sanjûroku ku), also printed in 1866. The prints are:

1) Actor Sawamura Tanosuke III as Rikiya, No. 23 in the series

2) Actor Ichimura Uzaemon XIII (市村 羽左 衛門) in the role Tsuma Kasosayo Jirō (妻笠曽代次郎)
