Subject:Chinese Scroll - Xu Qixiong or Wang Youzheng? 230.21
Posted By: Chelsea Sat, Apr 11, 2026 IP: 76.238.198.207

Hi all,

I have a silk scroll that I am trying to attribute. I found the same image of the young girl in a coat on a Chinese website that identifies the artist as Xu Qixiong. I’ve included a link; you need to click “Expand Full Text” to view the full image (you have to scroll for a moment to get to it).

I also matched one of the seals to works by Wang Youzheng, though the style aligns much more closely with Qixiong than Youzheng. Could the matching seal be a studio seal or an auspicious mark rather than a personal one? I have not found many works by Qixiong with clearly legible seals, and Google Translate was not helpful with the calligraphy. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As always, thank you so much for your help!

-Chelsea

Nice, you have identified a good authentication problem which I don't have a definitive answer to, but the painting you have bears the inscription and signature of Wang Youzheng 王有政 rather than Xu Qihong 徐启雄. What might be happening here is that a third painter has made a copy of the Xu Qihong picture you have found that omits the foliage to the girl's left; then, either the artist or some commercially minded individual added a signature and and seals to pass the work off as Wang's. The first seal here reads "seal of Wang Youzheng," The second is called his "painting seal".
