Subject:Tang Sancai Horse Authenticity
Posted By: Ally Mon, Sep 25, 2023 IP: 73.47.66.171

I haven't located an appraiser yet (honestly don't even know where to begin) but I'm wondering if this group can tell me what they think about the authenticity of this Tang horse that I recently required.

Description:
- has the characteristic Sancai glaze (cobalt blue, amber, green)
- drip glaze, ending around the top of the horse's feet
- fine crackle-like appearance to the glaze
- unglazed areas absorb water well and stays wet for a while
- material is soft to the touch
- appears to be a white clay

Thanks in advance!!

I think it's quite unlikely to be a genuine Tang burial item; these have been created by the thousands since the 1980s alone. There's little variation in the blue glaze, for instance, and blue was the least common glaze color. The piece has a bright overall luster, which one would not expect after excavating something from the ground after more than 1,200 years, etc.
