Subject:Japanese Bronze identification
Posted By: Mark Adams Wed, May 24, 2023 IP: 2405:6e00:208b:fa45:

Purchased this large Japanese Bronze depicting two minogames on a rock.
Would appreciate it if someone could decipher the inscription.
Regards,
Mark@imperial

I'd wait for I.Nagy to correct it, but this may be 芳芸 the Japanese version of 芳藝 in Chinese, meaning "Virtuous Art" or "Beautiful Art".

Fingers crossed,

Bill H.

Was wise to issue the cautionary reminder. No better teacher than I.Nagy.

Call me back-to-the-books Bill still :)

Thank you both Mr Nagy and Bill H.
Would this be a name of maker (houn) or as Bill suggests a saying?
I tried to find out but really came up with more questions than answers on google.

Yes, Hōun 芳雲 (Fragrant Cloud) is the art-name of the artist.
Just for reference, pls. copy and paste the URL below.
(Unfortunately, the linked Aucfan auction site does not contain biographical information about the artist)
