Subject:Help translate Chinese Porcelain Tile
Posted By: Roger Sat, May 06, 2023 IP: 2600:100e:b019:1f08:

Hi all!
Just bought this Chinese tile. I would greatly appreciate any help reading the calligraphy on it. Unfortunately, I can’t remove the tile from the frame without destroying the frame. That aside, I’d appreciate whatever you can tell me. Thank you!

This plaque illustrates the "Demon Queller", Chinese demigod Zhong Kui, known as Shoki in Japan. In my opinion, this plaque is a more contemporary forgery of many in circulation with attribution to Wang Qi, a principal portraitist in the Jingdezhen artist group known as "The Eight Friends of Zhushan". The cyclical date of 1932 (Renshen year on the Chinese cyclical calendar) more likely would be 1992 if actually correct.

I've added a couple of images below, the first of an early scroll depicting Zhong Kui and the second a double-panel screen that's a period Wang Qi work.

Best regards,

Bill H.
