Subject:Marks on Dragon Blue & White Pattern Tea Pot

Can anyone identify the marks for me please. Not sure if the photo is the right way up.

The mark is "Jin Tang Fu Ji" (錦堂福記), "The Splendid Hall of Good Fortune". According to a past edition of the Gerald Davison "Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics", this mark has been known since the Qianlong-era.

The only time I've seen it in the forum was 2018, when it came up on a covered jar that obviously was a 20th century piece. likewise, gotheborg, com shows the mark as possibly being used as recently as the late 20th century. Where yours falls on the calendar is moot, because just as you can't tell a book by its cover, the mark alone is not certain proof of age. Forum commentators are ill-served by those unwilling to show and tell it all with good photos.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I've volunteered to do Angela a one-time favor and process her photos, which she attempted to download in something other than jpeg or gif format. My further research turned up a gotheborg.com comment that a similar B&W mark of Jin tang fu ji was a Chinese factory name and possibly late Qing if not late 20th century. I found the mark also on a bronze-clad B&W tea caddy with Buddhistic Lion decoration described as possibly made for the Thai or Vietnam market.

In the latter regard, Angela's teapot with dragon motif has a bronze handle of a form used by Thai bronzesmiths in Bangkok to outfit Chinese Jingdezhen porcelain teapots for sale in local markets during the late 19th and early 20th century. Further, the painting style shows a good grasp of that era's style. So I'd say hers stands a reasonable chance of being of that period.

Best regards,

Bill H.
