Subject:Painting of the Xuande Emperor in a palanquin
Posted By: Cherdak Fri, Mar 10, 2023 IP: 2a03:d000:6501:f850:

Hello to all forum members. Who knows where this painting is? And what is the jade item on the Xuande Emperor's belt?
Thank you all in advance for your help!

If we can believe what's in the top left corner of your picture, the painting is in the British Museum, probably among the same collection as the one in the below snippet from the image of another painting there. I believe the item on his belt likely is a jade buckle that keeps his robe closed.

In these modern times, I'd suppose it might be a stun gun. :)

Best regards,

Bill H.

This hand-scroll is in the Gugong, Palace Museum Beijing, anonymous, ink and colours on silk, attributed to Xuande, 1426-1425 or Chenghua, 1465-1487 periods ….

Attached description/images of …

This is what we have found out

It's just that our family got a buckle, and many believe that this buckle was imperial and belonged to the Zhu family. The very beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the end of the 14th, the beginning of the 15th century. And the fact that the dog was taken from a painting by the court painter Li Di, who served with the emperors of the Southern Song. And this item is 100% archaeological from a tomb.

This is just a figurine, not a buckle. And there is no such jade. Therefore, there are no analogues.

If you checked the auction site, you hopefully saw that this piece was described as a "Toggle", which among other definitions can be a connector between two ends of a belt or strap. But since you seem to be the expert here, I'll just bow out of this conservation gracefully and assume a comfy recumbent position on my bed for a nap.

Bill H. ZZzzz.. ;)
