Subject:Qing Dynasty 'Qianlong' Mille Fleur Vase

Hello all,

I have a nicely enamelled vase with dragon handles, measures 8" tall with red oxide reign mark. I was wondering if this was of the period (1736 - 1759) or a later copy. If later, what period?

Your vase (compressed as shown) displays well but appears to be no older than circa 1900 or subsequently in the late Qing-Republic era. The millefleurs pattern is less precise than on Qianlong period porcelains, as are the blue handles in what may be the form of a pair of "Chilong" (螭龍), an auspicious son of the dragon. Also, the mark looks questionable, like it was written by a copyist with shaky hand, or perhaps it was a decal that floated on the surface of the glaze in an overheated kiln.

I've attached an example of a Qianlong period platter authenticated and sold by a major international auctioneer. Note the difference.

I've had a couple of auction houses agree with you, that my vase is Early 20th Century and that the reign mark is apocryphal.

I see what you mean regarding the preciseness of the millefleurs, it almost looks 'cloisonne-like', outlined and filled with gradated enamel. Also, as you say, I had my suspicions with the reign mark. I think it is hand painted, but doesn't have the sureness of touch that some do... Something that has been 'nervously' copied perhaps?

I have a small unmarked Oriental celadon glazed vase which I will post later, be interested to hear your thoughts on origin and date.

Just wondered where this might have originated and potential age? H: 6” hand turned porcelain vessel with a thinly applied celadon glaze, a couple of incised lines around the circumference no marks
