Subject:Ancient or antique: Chinese & Japanese figural sculpture art
Posted By: Jem Sat, Mar 11, 2023 IP: 2600:1700:3cd0:f900:

Hello all, I’m not sure if this is the best place to post a question like this, but I have come across several either ancient or antique jadeite and other semi precious stone sculptures, which vary in their erosion, some are quite weathered, but display familiar shapes which relate to ancient Asian myths, legends, theme, heros, and/or characters. I am curious to know if anyone might be able to suggest further reading/research books (which include quality photos or visuals) or other resources, so I might be able to learn more about the figural stone carvings I have come across?

Hi Jem,
Antique Jadeite carving cannot be learnt by looking at pictures.
You need to understand both the material and substitutes along with tooling techniques etc. This takes many years to master. Its not like porcelain.
Most in excess of 90% jadeite or jade carving currently on the market are either fake jade or made to look old.
You could post some here for an opinion as we have a number of reputable dealers and collector's.
Failing that i can only recommend that either you or the seller get appraisal from Sotheby's, Christie's or Bonham auction room's.
Regards,
Mark@imperial

You will not generate a great deal of assistance in this forum until the experts in it see photographs of what you are talking about. It is like the proverbial tale of blind men tried to describe an elephant by running their hands over different sides of it.
