Subject:Japanese Booklet ?
Posted By: Peter Tue, Feb 28, 2023 IP: 178.115.76.198

Hello.
I'd be grateful to know the subject or purpose of this booklet. I was informed that it is Japanese and dates from the late Meiji period.

Thank you.

I. Nagy is better informed about Japanese books than I am, but this is an interesting publication that compiles and transcribes images of seals, perhaps the collection of the individual who authored/published the book, or simply notable examples that the author gathered. So in your first photo, the top row gives the transcription into standard characters of the seal impressions that are impressed in the second row. The third row gives the name of the seal carver of the seal impressed immediately above.

Your booklet seems machine printed, likely thereby replicating an earlier manual of seal impressions that was made from the actual seals. I don't see a date in the photos you provided.
