Subject:Satsuma Signature
Posted By: Peter Sun, Feb 26, 2023 IP: 91.141.65.198

I'd be grateful if anyone were able to identify this signature on a small Satsuma vase.
The name appears to end in 'zen' or 'sen' if I'm not mistaken. I've tried Gotheborg, but can't seem to find a similar mark - perhaps it is from a lesser-known manufacturer.

Thanks for any assistance.

The mark reads: Genzan 玄山.
Date: 1920's / 1930's.
I have no information about the artist.
Regards,
Martin.

Possibly a different version of the 'Gyokuzan' mark used by famous late Meiji period Satsuma source Chin Jukan 12th (1835-1906). The Meiji era mark used a standard 'zan' character as seen above and in image below, suggesting that your vase may be signed by a more recent inheritor of that studio.

Best regards,

Bill H.
