Subject:Sukhothai Buddha - bronze, genuine or copy?
Posted By: Claire B Wed, Feb 01, 2023 IP: 2001:8003:5d2c:6401:

Hello,

I have this small bronze buddha figure. It seems quite rough with areas where the bronze has not been polished back, especially around the earlobe. Yet also appears to have some oxidation.
I'm curious if this seems to be genuine or a more contemporary copy?
I would appreciate assistance with identifying this and suggestions as to whether it is a copy or genuine.
images of front, back and base posted

dimensions are: 12 x 7 x 4 cm

Thanking you for your advice,
best wishes
Claire

based on the style, I believe your Buddha image is more likely to be Rattanakosin Kingdom (1782–1932), which would explain why its base appears to have been reduced using a modern-era machine-driven grinding wheel. Here's a similar one with clay core also intact that sold at auction last December. I also include pictures of another one I collected in Thailand with a topknot form suggesting a lotus bud and about 6-in high. No clay core but its base has been sealed with a blessed silk offering by a monk to assure it has been used in worship.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I did wonder about those machining marks on the base and wondered if it had been attached to a larger sculpture previously. Thanks for the information about the Rattanakosin period and link. That makes sense. Your Buddha there is wonderful.

Much appreciated. Thank you.
best,
Claire
