Subject:Guangxu Period Antique Chinese Porcelain Bowl ?
Posted By: Bruce Mon, Jan 23, 2023 IP: 99.60.109.187 Any help with identifying this bowl would be greatly appreciated. With the "CHINA" stamp I'm guessing that it's not very old. MANY THANKS FOR WHATEVER INPUT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE! |

Posted By: Bill H Mon, Jan 23, 2023 Your assumption is correct, probably dates to the late Qing-early Republic period, circa 1900-1925. The apocryphal mark reads "Made during the Jiaqing reign of the Great Qing Dynasty" (Da qing Jiaqing nian zhi - 大清嘉慶年製). Marks of "CHINA" were required by the McKinley Tariff Act passed by the American Congress in October 1890, requiring point of origin markings on trade goods by all foreign exporters to the USA. In 1914, the Congress passed a truth in labeling act further requiring addition of the wording "Made in", but the new provision seem to have not been enforced until the end of World War I in 1918. |
