Subject:Bizen or Shigaraki Chawan, Need help with the Tomobako translation
Posted By: Jeremy Thu, Jan 19, 2023 IP: 71.191.33.73

Hey Folks,
THis one is a bit of a spur of the moment purchase. I was falling asleep and I happened upon it and just thought it would be lovely to drink tea out of, I put my phone down and tried to sleep but after an hour of thinking about it I bought it. I initially thought Bizen-Yaki, but after recieving it today I am wondering if perhaps it is Shigaraki. It seems to have been well used and cared for. It may not be originally intended for a Chawan but it really is perfect for that, I just absolutely love the rustic feeling of it.
Hoping someone might solve the mystery of the inscription on the tomobako for me, and maybe someone has some insights on the bowl itself.
Many thanks,
Jeremy

A picture of the bowl might help. Boxes were often mismatched. For example, an old box used to store a newer piece.

So it seems the bowl is Shigaraki, I'll include some pictures... I had a friend translate part and apparently the tomobako is for a piece of Ki-seto, not sure if anyone can specify what it is. So it doesn't match. Curious if anyone has any ideas on the age of the bowl.
Cheers,
Jeremy

At least according to the tomobako it is a Ko-Seto
(Old Seto Ware)
Inscription on tomobako reads;
明治藤四郎燒 - Meiji Toshiro-yaki - Meiji Toshiro Ware
古瀬戸 菓子器 - Ko-Seto Kashiki - Old-Seto Bowl for Cakes
陶祖春慶景正 正裔 - Toso Shunkei Kagemasa Shoei- Ancessor of Shunkei Kagemasa the True Desccendant
天籟園三十五代景夫 - Tenraien the 35-dai Masao - Masao the 35th generation of Tenraien (Garden of Natural Sounds)

Kato Shirozaemon 加藤四郎左衛門 a.k.a. Kato Shiro
加藤四郎
One of Kagemasa's pseudonyms was Shunkei.
Potter from the Meiji to Taisho periods, He called himself as the 35th generation official descendant of the ancestor Kagemasa,

Lower square seal,(3rd character is illegible)
検査X済 - X Examined

With regards,
I.Nagy
