Subject:Unknown japanese print artist and scenes
Posted By: Tom Aspden Sun, Jan 01, 2023 IP: 195.213.108.192

Hello, I received this pair of prints for Christmas, but I don't recognise the artist's signature or the scenes they depict. Any help will be appreciated, and I can try to provide more photos if needed!

I found the first print in an online auction at the link below. Using an online translator I got:

This is Sakata Kintoki Ashigara Yamazumi, a series of medium-size works from the Meiji period by Koichi Ogata.

I hope I. Nagy can provide better information.

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you for the information! I was able to find more of this series, and I believe the second print is of Saigyo, the poet monk, and Minamoto Yoritomo exchange a silver cat. Consensus seems to be that they were published about 1889!

Pic.1,
公時足柄山住 - Kintoki Ashigarayama-zumi - Kintoki of Ashigara Mountains
Pic.2,
頼朝西行へ銀猫を賜ふ圖 - Yoritomo Saigyō e ginneko wo tamawau zu - Picture of Yoritomo giving a silver cat to Saigyō

On both prints the artist`s signature can be found in black on a red background next to the explanatory texts.
尾形耕一 Ogata Kōichi

Both prints are from an "orihon" (accordion type) print book, with 10 sheets (20 pictures).
Title of Orihon;
智勇史略圖解 全 - Chiyū Shiryaku Zukai Zen - A Brief Illustrated History of Inteligence and Courage, In One Volume

It was pubished in Meiji 22 (1889)
by Fukuda Kumajirō (福田熊次郎)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks very much I. Nagy, That's confirmed/ refined some of the information I'd managed to find! It's nice to know the volume they were printed in as well.

it is of interest to note that Ogata Koichi was a pupil of Ogata Gekko, and in the book you reference Ogata Gekko was listed as writing the text of the book
