Subject:Arita mark?
Posted By: Victor Thu, Dec 29, 2022 IP: 75.146.247.209

Hi- I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with the mark on this bowl. The style seems Arita to me, and the mark is similar to the Aoki mark, but not quite the same. Does this look familiar to anyone?
Thanks!

Your Japanese bowl has a mark of "富", a character with the Chinese meaning of "Riches, Abundance and Wealth" and similar Japanese meanings pronounced "Fuki" and "Tomi". In the usually reliable 1882 Book on Japanese Marks & Seals by James Lord Bowes it is pronounced "Fuki" in listed porcelain marks. I'm hoping that I.Nagy might weigh in on the preferred pronunciation with his superior linguistic abilities. Meanwhile, see the URL Link and image below where the differences first came to light for me.

Best regards,

Bill H.
