Subject:Help identify Japanese Vase/Artist
Posted By: Roger Mon, Nov 07, 2022 IP: 2601:281:d300:975:20

Hello All!
Here's two large Japanese (?) vases with wonderful paintings. I've tried to identify the base mark but was unable to. Initially, I thought maybe Aoki, Fuku or even Tsukuru, but nope. I would greatly appreciate any help in determining the maker and/or artist on these vases. Thank you!

It is Chinese faux Deng Bishan.

魚趣 - Fish fun
碧珊寫 - Painted by Bishan
Bottom mark,
碧珊 - Bishan

Deng Bishan 鄧碧珊 1874-1930
Famous ceramic painter specialized in pastel fish & algae.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Deng Bishan was executed at Jingdezhen in 1930 by guerrilla troops under Chinese communist military leader Fang Zhimin. The cyclical year that fell the year before in 1929 was "Jisi" (己巳), which I've seen in inscriptions on other fish-pattern porcelains attributed to Deng that appear likely to be posthumously produced Republic-era "tributes" by other painters. I mention this because your vase on the left of the first photo appears to bear the "Jisi" date. These vases are quite attractive and I'm not suggesting you throw them out, However, I suggest you make a set of high quality photos of them with closeups of the inscriptions and fish motifs to submit to a major auctioneer like Christie's or Sotheby's for an appraisal of auction potential. If they reject your submission it can be taken as a strong sign that they recognize them as later repros and not likely to draw high bids.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks much Bill! Very interesting and I will do as you recommend! The paintings are wonderful, not sure about the yellow color. Cheers!
