Posted By: Rat Mon, Nov 07, 2022 It depicts Zhongkui the demon queller in a Chinese style but could indeed be a Japanese work. Am unsure if the horizontal cracking is natural or induced. The painting does have an inscription; post a detail of the lower left, below the dragon’s claws |

Posted By: BL Tue, Nov 08, 2022 Thanks Peter and Rat Mon. The painting at the moment is not in my possession but later today I will post a photo(s) of the area where you both feel there is an inscription. Once again much thanks for your help. |

Posted By: rat Wed, Nov 09, 2022 The picture names Xu Shichang 徐世昌 as the painter; he was a general during the Republic era of China (1912-1949). The signature is sort of in his style, but the painting and subject matter are definitely not (https://ishare.ifeng.com/c/s/7nNbt8d3ccH), so I think this is a recent picture that's trying to pass itself off as by Xu, the horizontal cracks being induced distress |

Posted By: BL Thu, Nov 10, 2022 Rat-Thanks for your information about the painting. Yesterday while doing a search I found an image of the painting which was attributed to Xu Shichang. It was for sale through Heritage Auctions in 2018 but did not sell. Thanks again for your help. |
