Subject:Tea cup
Posted By: João Silva Sat, Sep 10, 2022 IP: 176.78.46.4

Hi, I have this tea cup that looks old and have nice details. I don't know much but it looks famille rose. It's not marked on the bottom. Can anyone tell me something about it and if it's valuable?
Thanks
João Silva

This cup is a circa 1875 example of porcelain wares called "Famille Rose Medallion", arguably China's most prevalent export porcelain pattern of the late 19th century. "Famille Rose", is French for "the pink family" and can be valuable in sets, but a single cup like would have only nominal value. Search eBay for examples.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks for the information. The guy selling it had it together with the saucer, but it was made in Macau and looked newer and worst quality, so I just bought the cup.

Based on the facial features, the worn decoration, the manner in which the figures are done and the overall style I'd tentatively suggest a dating in the period between 1870 and late 1880s. Your Canton Teacup in Rose Medallion decoration is serial produced for export and not of the higher quality one would find more often in the 1860s. Hopefully I could help to some extend.

With regards

Thanks, good information. Compared to the made in Macau I usually see in the flea market, it's better quality and more detailed, that's why it caught my attention. But especially the faces don't look very good.
