Subject:Translation and identification issues with Japanese jug
Posted By: Madria Fri, Sep 09, 2022 IP: 87.78.165.120

Hello everyone,
a friend of mine found this jug in a local store and asked for my opinion on it. But other than that it's probably Japenese and made in the late Meiji period (early 20th century?) with a satsuma flower decoration I was not able to help. It has a lovely cracked-ice glaze and the decoration appears to be quite nicely made. What were these vessels used for? Can anyone help me to identify the inscription on the underside? There is a factory or collectors mark in blue saying '172?' and an inscription in Giosho-style (?) for what I need your help with translation. I would appreciate your opinions, advice and corrections.

Best regards

Madria

My tentative reading of the marking;
平又 - Hiramata
辛亥夏月 - Year of Metal-Pig (1911) Summer Month

With regards,
I.Nagy
